The Project

The Jordaens Van Dyck Panel Paintings Project (JVDPPP) is an innovative and pioneering multidisciplinary art historical initiative co-founded in 2016 by Dr. Joost Vander Auwera and Drs. Justin Davies.

JVDPPP is systematically studying the oil paintings on oak panels by Jacques Jordaens (1593-1678) and Anthony Van Dyck (1599-1641). A comprehensive dendrochronological survey and the recording and collating of the Antwerp panel makers’ and Guild brand marks on the reverse of the panels, combined with new archival research and traditional art historical scholarship, will throw new light on these artists, their oeuvres and painting on wood panels in the 17th century.

Anthony Van Dyck (1599 - 1641), Study of a Young Woman, c. 1618-20 Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna
Jacques Jordaens (1593 - 1678), The Education of Jupiter, Rockoxhuis, Antwerp

JVDPPP travelled to examine 297 oil paintings on wood panel by or related to Van Dyck and Jordaens in 108 public and private collections in 14 countries, from the National Gallery in London to the Museo de Arte de Ponce in Puerto Rico. The travels were interrupted by the worldwide pandemic.

JVDPPP is now publishing the results of its research on its open access website, in the Jordaens Van Dyck Journal (three published so far, with the fourth concluding issue due in June 2023) and in scholarly journals. Its archival research is translated into English, as are out of copyright articles on Van Dyck, Jordaens and panel makers originally published in German, French and Dutch.

Please contact us if you would like any further information about the project.

JVDPPP has also funded the establishment of the panel marks part of the RKD Marks on Art database.

The project was funded by the Fonds Baillet Latour and the project partners are the University of Amsterdam and the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, Brussels.
