Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum, Aachen (inv. no. GK129), on permanent loan from the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin (Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz) since 1884

The panel is constructed of two planks from an oak tree which grew in north-eastern France. The last heart ring dates to 1606 which, allowing for missing sapwood, leads to around 1616 for the felling date of the tree.

The panel maker’s mark is that of Michiel Claessens, active in Antwerp from 1590 to 1637.

This painting is the oil sketch for The Rest on the Flight into Egypt (The Madonna with Partridges), oil on canvas, 215 x 285.5 cm, inv. no. GE 539, in the State Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg.
