This section includes the most comprehensive collection of documents on the Antwerp panel makers’ and Guild brand marks found by the project on the reverse of the panels. Included here are biographies on panel makers as well as translated archival documents and out-of-print articles. Many of these valuable seventeenth-century documents are transcribed and translated into English for the first time.
Listed below are the archival documents on four panel makers and panel maker families. Each biography includes transcriptions and translations of documents found by JVDPPP researchers. More panel makers will be published over the course of the project.
These are the two most important documents on Antwerp panel makers: the Panel Maker’s Petition and the Joiner’s Ordinance from 1617. These documents allow an important understanding of the role and rules of the Antwerp panel makers in constructing and marking their panels for the painters of the day and the Guild brand marks found by the project on the reverse of the panels.
To make Jordaens and Van Dyck research as accessible as possible, JVDPPP is publishing English translations of important out of copyright articles and texts, or in-copyright articles with the author’s permission, for the first time, as well as its own new research and findings. The articles related to panel makers are listed here
