Jan van Belcamp in London: new documents and perspectives

The June 2022 issue of The Burlington Magazine includes an article by JVDPPP team members Justin Davies and James Innes-Mulraine on Jan van Belcamp, a Dutch-born artist and second Keeper of the King’s Pictures. The article is free for a week as of June 3rd.

Detail of Henrietta Maria, by Jan van Belcamp and Hendrick van Steenwyck the Younger. 1637. Oil on panel, 51 by 44.5 cm. (Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen, Dresden).

Like other independent artists in London during the reign of Charles I, Jan van Belcamp has long been overshadowed by Anthony van Dyck, whose paintings he copied for the royal family. Recently discovered documents, including his will, reveal a much more diverse career, notably as a painter of ‘perspectives’. They also demonstrate the extent of his ideological and financial commitment to the Commonwealth.
