Six former pupils of Jordaens testify in the De Scaglia case (12 August 1641)

Abstract

Six former pupils declare on behalf of Jordaens that the seven paitings the heirs of abbot De Scaglia do not wish to accept, have been painted for the abbot. When the abbotwas still alive, he regularly visited Jordaens to keep himself informed about the progress and encouraged Jordaens to complete the work as quickly as possible.

Compareert Joannes de Bruijn, oudt 21 Jaeren, Henrick Wildens, oudt 20 Jaeren, Henrick Kerskes, oudt 20 Jaeren, Daniel Verbraken, out 19 Jaeren, Joannes Baptista Huijbrechts, out negenthien Jaeren ende Joannes Baptista van den Broeck, out 18 jaren, alle leerende de const van het schilderen ten huijse van de requirant affirmarint dat geduerende de tijt dat sij arrestanten de voorschreven conste ten huijse vande requirant hebben geleert, hebben gesien dat den requirant diversche stucken schilderije heeft gemaeckt voor wijlen den heer Abbé de Schaillie ende dat geduerende de selve int werck waren soo de voorschreven heer Abbé als desselven Secretaris respective, ten huijse des requirants diversche reijsen hebben geweest om de schilderijen te sien ende de expeditie daer van te recommanderen gelijck sij affirmanten dickwils ghehoirt

Joannes de Bruijn, 21 years old, Henrick Wildens, 20 years old, Henrick Kerskes, 20 years old, Daniel Verbraken, 19 years old, Joannes Baptista Huijbrechts, nineteen years old and Joannes Baptista van den Broeck, 18 years old, all trained in the art of painting at the house of the apellant, affirm, that they, in the period of their training at the house of the apellant, had seen that the apellant executed several pieces of painting for the late abbot de Schaillie, and in this period they noticed that the abbot and his secretary visited the house of the apellant several times to look at the paintings and to recommend their expedition, as they have often heard

hebben dat zij aende requirant recommandeerde de schilderijen hoe eer hoe liever aff te maecken, verclaeren oock wel te weten dat eenighe van die gemaeckt sijnde tot seven in getal door de requirant met Andries Variants, arbeijder ten huijse van de voornoemde wijlen heer Abbé sijn gesonden geworden des voren, geleden van ontrent Passchen sonder den preciese dach onthouden te hebben, alle voor redenen van wetenschap, allegerende dat sij aen ende present sijn geweest, daer allen t gene voorschreven is geschiet is ende besonder de voorschreven Henrick Kerstens ende Joannes Babtista vanden Broeck verclaeren dat ten tijde de voorschreven seven stucken door den voorschreven Andries arbeijder vande huijse voorschreven Abbé sijn gesonden sij de schilderijen alsdoen opgerolt ende bijeen gebonden hebben

Compareert Henrick Kerstens, oudt 20 jaeren ende Andries Variaents, arbeijder, oudt sesendertich jaeren affirmanint hoe dat ontrent Paesschen lestleden sonder den preciese dach onthouden te hebben, Andries Variants voorschreven ontboden sijnde ten huijse des requirants om te dragen seven stucken schilderije wesende ineen gerolt ten huijse van wijlen den heer Abbé de Schaille sij attestanten tsamen sijn gegaen ten huijse vande voorschreven here Abbé ende aldaer gelevert hebben de voorschreven

that they recommanded the apellant to finish the paintings as soon as possible, they also testify to know that, requested by the apellant, Andries Variants, worker, delivered some of the seven paintings at the house of the aforementioned late abbot De Schaille, around Eastern, without remembrance of the exact date, all for the purpose of notification, arguing that they were present, with all the things described above, and especially the aforementioned Henrick Kerstens and Joannes Babtista vanden Broeck declare that when the aforementioned Andries, worker, deliverd the aforementioned seven pieces at the house of the aforementioned abbot, they then rolled up the paintings and tied them together.

Henrick Kerstens, 20 years old and Andries Variaents, worker, thirty six years old, affirm, that around Eastern, without being able to recall the exact date, the aforementioned Andries Variants was summoned at the house of the apellant to carry seven pieces of painting that had been rolled together to the the house of the late abbot De Schaille, they went together to the house of the aforementioned abbot to put the aforementioned paintings
