The sketch is a copy after Van Dyck’s Portrait of a Woman in the Galeria degli Uffizi, Florence (inv. no. 777, oil on canvas, 204 x 117 cm) which had previously been identified as Margaret de Lorraine, Duchess of Orléans (see Susan J. Barnes, Nora de Poorter, Oliver Millar, Horst Vey, Van Dyck. A Complete Catalogue of the Paintings, Yale University Press, 2004, p. 391, no. III. 200).

There is an old label on the reverse of the panel which states that the sitter is ‘Mme St. Croix’.
